ENVIRONMENT
BASIC APPROACH
As a company whose core business is manufacturing, Noritsu Koki believes that it has a responsibility to consider the environment throughout the entire product lifecycle in the development and supply process.
The Noritsu Koki Group has set “Delivering environmentally responsible products” as one of the actions of its Materiality Action Plan. Group companies will adopt many different approaches to reduce environmental impact in each process from raw material procurement to product development and final disposal, and will promote various initiatives to deliver more environmentally responsible products.
INITIATIVES
REDUCING USE OF VIRGIN PLASTICS
Group companies take steps to reduce the amount of virgin plastic used in their products and packaging materials. Teibow is developing a fiber nib that uses recycled fiber from PET bottles and biomass materials. AlphaTheta is phasing in substitution of packaging materials with paper materials and JLab has already achieved 100% plastic-free packaging and uses recycled plastic in product materials.
HIGHLIGHT 01 TeibowDevelopment of Stick Core Using Recycled Plastic and Biomass Fiber
Teibow is expanding the range of applications for the technologies developed in manufacturing pen nibs from writing instruments to new applications. One example is an air freshener stick core, which is in increasing demand due to changes in lifestyles. Air freshener sticks are made from mostly natural materials, but one challenge is that the level of vaporization is unstable. The fiber core developed using Teibow’s pen nib technology stabilizes the vaporization of air fresheners. Moreover, in response to customer needs for products with environmentally friendly materials, Teibow successfully developed a fiber stick that uses 100% recycled plastic. It is also developing a fiber core made from environmentally friendly biomass materials. Teibow will remain committed to developing and supplying pen nibs that excel in both quality and environmental aspects.
HIGHLIGHT 02 JLabAchievement of 100% Plastic-Free Packaging and Wrapping Materials
JLab has long been shifting away from plastic packaging materials and pursuing better recyclability. It has achieved zero use of plastic in packaging materials of products launched since 2021. It has switched to paper pulp materials in packages and hangers, and uses an environmentally friendly printing ink that contains no metallic foil, which means that it can be recycled without the need for separation at the time of disposal. In addition, through the JLab Recycling Program,* a product recycling service provided by JLab, it is building a system to ensure products used by customers can be properly recycled.
- *A program that offers customers a discount on the next purchase when they return JLab products directly to JLab after they are no longer needed.
PRODUCT ENERGY-SAVING AND RESOURCE-SAVING
AlphaTheta is putting efforts into developing and delivering products with an energy-saving mode to reduce battery consumption. In addition, AlphaTheta offers an extended warranty service to extend product life cycle. JLab is working on to achieve significant energy savings and downsizing batteries in its wireless earbuds through development of Bluetooth chipset and such.
MANAGING CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES
At Teibow, chemical substances are strictly managed through regular environmental measurements in addition to complying with various related laws and regulations. Teibow also recycles about 70% of the amount of chemical substances used and strives to reduce the amount of discharged substances based on the policy of minimizing the discharge of chemical substances.
Teibow develops a manual and conducts regular education and training in preparation for any leakage of chemical substances due to natural disasters or accidents.
AlphaTheta establishes a management system for evaluating chemical substances in products and strictly controls substances contained in products.
